The Principle:

The best caretaker of a person’s health is the person himself. And for that a person needs to have a basic knowledge about the common ailments that surround him and ways to cope up with them. One should be aware of what the person needs to do and more importantly what not to do. Our job as MEDicos is not only to cure ailments but also to EDUCATE and empower people to become responsible for their own health.

The Idea:

Meducation is a web based project where trusted and relevant information about the common diseases and how to take care of oneself in such diseases would be handed out to the Rotaractors in a simple language they understand. This would include information on what is the disease, whom to approach, how to handle them, how to pick up danger signs. This would also be followed by FAQs and breaking of myths surrounding these diseases. And to make it interesting it may include quizzes also.

Presented on a fortnightly basis it would be an excellent tool for improving the health of not only the Rotaractors but also their families.

Pilot projects:

Breast feeding week awareness and World hepatitis day awareness programs

The protocol:

  1. We select any disease which is a public health problem. Preferably if a particular day or week has been dedicated to a particular disease, then that disease gets the preference. Because a lot many projects of the Rotary/Rotaract are conducted in this manner and this will be the time when the people will be most receptive to listen about that disease.
For e.g.:  October month is dedicated to Breast cancer awareness
  2. We would prefer some health issues concerning Mother and Child Care because that’s the most neglected and the most vulnerable area of health care.
  3. We then present simple information about the disease as regards to its
  • Basic pathology
  • What is the disease called or known as in local languages
  • how to identify the disease
  • what are the danger signals of the disease,
  • what to do and what not to do to cope up with the disease
  • when to approach a doctor
  • whom to approach
  • info about support groups
  • info about financial assistance if available (e.g. if a pt. has to travel to a metro like Mumbai for anti cancer therapy, then the railways offers massive concession in the rail fares.)
  • And most importantly how to prevent the disease.
  1. This is presented in any interesting forms like presentations including charts, pictures, diagrams, quotes. We can also create simple quizzes to arouse interest.
  2. This is followed by FAQs paying special attention to the myths and facts.
  3. Once this is done we post on the web… through Rotaract website, facebook, twitter  making sure everyone is tagged. Every member of the club is instructed to post a copy of the same on their wall and tag their friends.
  4. Responses are recorded for evaluation.
